Meade County Schools proudly recognized longtime educator Mrs. Darlene Board as a 2026 Greenwave Legacy Award recipient during the district’s annual Opening Day celebration.
Board dedicated 28 years of her career to serving the students of Meade County Schools. During her time in the classroom, she taught students in grades one through five, worked in Title I, and served at both the original Flaherty Elementary School and the current Flaherty schools.
Her journey to the classroom, however, did not begin immediately after high school. Board first attended business school and began working at a bank. After her own children started school, she realized education was where she was meant to serve and returned to college to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher.
That decision would ultimately impact generations of Meade County students and families.
Even after retiring from the classroom in 2008, Board continued serving the school community. She worked as a substitute teacher and later joined the office staff at Flaherty Primary School, where she continued welcoming students and supporting families with the kindness and compassion that had defined her teaching career.
Mrs. Amy English, a longtime Meade County educator and former student of Board, introduced her during the Greenwave Legacy recognition.
English was a first-grade student in Board’s classroom during the 1981-82 school year at the original Flaherty Elementary School near St. Martin’s Church. More than 40 years later, English is beginning her 27th year serving Meade County Schools. This school year, both of English’s daughters are also beginning their teaching careers in the district.
The connection offered a powerful example of an educator’s influence extending from one generation to the next.
English recalled that some of her strongest memories of Board were not specific classroom lessons, but the way her teacher made her feel cared for. She shared the story of a summer day following her first-grade year when English’s father unexpectedly became ill during a softball tournament. Board immediately stepped in, took the six-year-old English home with her, and cared for her until her parents could return.
Years later, English said she understands the significance of that moment differently.
Board was not simply caring for a student. She was caring for an entire family during a difficult moment.
That spirit of service extended well beyond Board’s professional career. She and her husband recently celebrated 60 years of marriage and raised two children together. They now have two grandchildren.
Throughout her introduction, English emphasized that while curriculum and instruction are important, the lasting impact of an educator is often found in relationships.
More than four decades after sitting in Board’s first-grade classroom, English still remembers feeling safe, cared for, and important.
That enduring impact represents the purpose of the Greenwave Legacy Award: recognizing individuals whose service has left a lasting mark on Meade County Schools and the generations who have followed them.
Meade County Schools proudly congratulates Mrs. Darlene Board on being named a 2026 Greenwave Legacy Award recipient and thanks her for a lifetime of service to students, families, and the Greenwave community.
